I am using FM11.
I am creating the pdf via Print Book... but Print... has the same effect.
The illustration is in a Graphic Frame which in turn is in an Anchored Frame.

To place the image I select the Graphic Frame, click the Import File... icon, and Import By Reference.
The png is created elsewhere, imported into Illustrator and then saved using Save for Web... with the following settings:
System resources is not a problem.
