This is not a problem with LR not recognizing the files as much as the OS not having a way to show LR the files, so installing the codecs can help the OS show LR the files, because the camera is being presented to the OS as a Device not a drive-letter. At least this was the situation with someone else within the last few days using an old Canon XSi 450D which was released about the same time as the 7D and installing the codec helped them.
